In other news, today we wore our gum boots to go riding in a catamaran around a lake and look for caimans. This was after we\u2019d ridden in the boat for five hours, getting to our current lodge.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was with some tourist on a night walk,\u201d is how a story that Reve likes to tell begins. \u201cI was wearing my gum boots. We were looking\u2014ooh, aah, things like that\u2014when the tourists say, \u2018Look! Look!\u2019 And there was a fer-de-lance between my feet.\u201d He says that\u2019s because the venomous snakes can sense heat, and the gum boots kept his heat in.<\/p>\n

At the pond, we saw plenty of caimans. We got very close to one to take its picture, and it only swam away when it decided we were too close for comfort. That was one of two lakes that are near this lodge. The lodge is taken care by native people\u2014one family comes in a month. Besides the natives, we (along with our cook, guide, captain, captain\u2019s son) are the only people in this five million-acre UNESCO World Heritage site.<\/p>\n
